Did you know there are actually TWO types of Freelancing Niches?
1) Your Audience Niche
2) Your Expertise Niche
Here’s how you determine both of them!
Audience Niche
Alright, you need to know your audience. This one is easy. I’m going to ask you a few questions…
What do YOU LOVE doing or being a part of?…Skiing? Hiking? Fine dining? Helping animals?
Come up with 5 CLEAR answers!
Alright… out of those 5 things… pick 3 of them that can most likely translate into a business opportunity (i.e. If you love fine dining, are there fine dining establishments in your city? If you love helping animals, are there organizations in your area?, etc.)
Also, keep in mind which of these are theoretically going to have a marketing budget (Law firm vs. Small non-profit organization)
Now of those 3 things, which ONE of them would best benefit from the services you hope to offer? Before you answer that question, you need to know your expertise niche…so let’s jump into that, then come back to this question…
Expertise Niche
You should know exactly the types of services you are able to offer.
You should offer only what you are able to deliver at a very high level of proficiency.
Sure, you can be the guy/gal who offers “everything”, but are you able to truly deliver everything at high quality and value? If not, don’t.
In order to help you decide what kind of freelance business you’re going to build, you need to find out your PRIMARY FOCUS…
How do you do that?
I use a system called, POWER + PASSION + PROFIT
POWER
This is what you’re really GOOD at. Let’s say “seeing growth opportunities in new businesses”
PASSION
This is what you LOVE doing. Let’s say “making WordPress sites”
PROFIT
This is what your AUDIENCE is willing to pay for. Let’s say “Marketing solutions to acquire new leads.”
Remember the 3 different audiences you came up with a few minutes ago? Test EACH of them in the PROFIT section. Which of the 3 would be most willing to pay for your EXPERTISE niche? THAT should be your AUDIENCE.
BAM! Your primary focus should be a mix of your POWER + PASSION + PROFIT. Don’t just offer “Web Design Services”… Be specific, with this formula…
“In my business, I offer [SPECIFIC SERVICE] to [AUDIENCE] that [MEASUREABLE RESULT]”
For example…
“I offer EASY TO EDIT WORDPRESS WEBSITES to LAW FIRMS that CONVERT TRAFFIC INTO LEADS”
—
In summary…
- Determine your AUDIENCE niche
- Uncover your EXPERTISE niche
- Smash the two together to see if they’ll work!
