How do I handle a client project where the scope keeps shifting?
When you price something correctly, it's usually premium, and none of that is really a problem, because you've priced in your ability to explore, to experiment, to have lots of buffer. The second best defense is clear boundaries in the scope, in the agreement. Then when they ask for something new, you say: "I understand you're requesting this. From my perspective, as your professional, I don't think it's going to get you closer to what you're trying to get towards. I respect your desire to explore something new. I think it needs to not be a priority at this moment, and in order to do that for you, I'll need to create a change order. Would you like me to park this idea and revisit it later, or build it in and prioritize it for next week?" You control the scope.
